Concentric saw extraordinary results this year, and it was in no small part thanks to our team. I want to share some highlights from 2019 with you.

We published several meaningful studies on behalf of our clients:

• Building New Transmission: Experience to Date Does Not Support Expanding Solicitations
• Retail Competition in Electricity: What Have We Learned in 20 Years?
• An Empirical Analysis of Avoided Cost Rates for Wind and Solar QFs Under PURPA

Our financial advisory practice played significant roles in the merger of San Jose Water with Connecticut Water, the Duquesne Light Holdings acquisition of TEN Inc., and Unitil’s divestiture of Usource.

Our team represented NuPower LLC, a 10MW fuel cell developer of a district energy project, as they sought approval for a cost-of-service-based rate by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.  We developed multiple rounds of testimony, including a critical piece on non-regulated ROE.  Our work assisted NuPower in securing a Power Purchase Agreement with United Illuminating at a rate that reflected the unique risks that unregulated developers face in the market.

Our expert witnesses filed testimony in:

• Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming and at the FERC and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
• Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Québec, Saskatchewan, and the Canada Energy Regulator and the Québec Superior Court (District of Gaspé).
• And looking farther afield, we also filed testimony in Bermuda and Guam.

At the organizational level, Concentric is growing and expanding our service offerings, including the addition of a team that is focused on the emerging role of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues  in our industry.

Mr. Paul Rice recently joined our team as an Assistant Vice President providing clients with innovative energy and technology solutions under our Future of Energy practice. Paul is a consultant with over 15 years of experience with new business models, product development, and consulting. He is a trailblazer in developing client capabilities in customer experience, microgrids, renewable and distributed energy solutions, and alternative utility business strategies, and will provide clients with innovative energy and technology solutions under our Future of Energy practice. Before joining Concentric, Paul was the Director of New Energy and Customer Solutions Offerings at Black & Veatch Management Consulting.
